What Does BMW Stand For?
BMW is a German car company that specializes in luxury models. BMW stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke, which translates to Bavarian Motor Works.
Why is the Company Called Bavarian Motor Works?
In 1917 BMW originally manufactured airplane engine in Bavaria, a southern state in Germany. BMW is a part of the BMW Group, as well as other luxury brands that include MINI and Rolls-Royce. Currently, the BMW headquarters is located in Munich, the capital of Bavaria.
BMW started in 1916 and was originally under the acronym BFW, or Bayerische Flugzeug Werke. The name switch to BMW officially happened in 1917 as it continued to produce airplane engines. In the 1920s the company introduced their production of motorcycles as well, and by 1928 they started as an automaker. For the next 20 years, they were met with stiff competition.
German entrepreneur Herbert Quandt gained controlling interest of BMW in 1959, and the company introduced the 700 Series. Once the 700 Series was introduced, BMW vehicles gained popularity both overseas and in the United States.
Today, BMW is still owned by the BMW Group, or BMW AG. The AG at the end signified that this is a public company and owned by shareholders. The Quandt family still owns 50% of BMW today, while the other 50% percent is owned by public investors.
